National Junior Honor Society raises money for local organization

The National Junior Honor Society is a nation wide organization to recognize students for their scholastic achievements and good character qualities. The NJHS has chapters in the 50 states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, several U.S. territories and Canada. This school is in the national chapter. Each year new members are added to the society, on average the Altoona Area Junior High school NJHS inducts between 95 and 150 students. The NJHS’s spring project was the fourth annual mini THON. This year students raised $5,681.00 for the Mountain Lion Backpack Program.

Hand me that paddle! Ninth grader Allison Peterman competed in several competitions as well as non-competitive activities. A field trip is available to NJHS members who follow the rules and pay the $75 fair share.

Yummy! At the mini THON event administrators purchased pizza for the participants. A concession stand was also available with drinks, snacks and candy.

So low! Ninth grader Raquel Dunio competed in the limbo contest at mini THON. Different competitions are held such as jumping rope, hula-hooping and limbo with a reward of a $5 gift card.

Mine! Participants in THON stayed active for four hours by playing different sports. Students could sign up to be a part of a badminton team for a spot on the bracket.

One on one! Ninth grader Kaleb Riley competed in the ping-pong competition by putting his name on the bracket. Unlike the badminton bracket which was composed of several teams of 4, the ping-pong bracket is played as 1-on-1.
