The 7-1-2 Altoona Lady Lions secured a decisive 5-1 win over the Cambria Heights Highlanders, a match that could almost echo the famous “Highlander” line: “There can be only one!” And in this case, the Lady Lions were the ones to stand tall.
Mikayla Patterson set up Evie Irwin for the opening goal, while Morgan Irwin provided the assist for Layla McCarter to make it 2-0 by halftime. Despite a rainy misfortune with an own goal that made it 2-1, Altoona wasn’t fazed. Elsie Behe capitalized on her chances, driving the ball home to stretch the lead to 3-1. From there, Morgan Irwin and Layla McCarter teamed up for another goal, with Morgan Irwin capping off the game with a final strike to make it 5-1.
The midfield, defensive line, and goalkeepers of the Altoona Lady Lions were the unsung heroes of their 5-1 victory over the Cambria Heights Highlanders. The Lady Lions now set their sights on Thursday’s rematch against the Lady Bisons of Bedford at Roosevelt Field.
The Mt Lions boys soccer team prowled on the Cambria heights highlanders. Quin Sipes and the defense pitched another shutout on the season. The Mt Lions scored their first goal early with a low corner shot by Mahmoud Ibrahim assisted by Finn Black. Then came three goals, all scored by Ki’Yonte Barnes. Two of those goals were assisted by Bryce Snare and Deveron Boore. His third goal came from a line drive off of the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net. Ki’Yonte got his hat trick, but he wasn’t done yet. He sent a beautiful pass to Bentley Irvin who scored the Mt. Lions final goal of the game. The boys beat Cambria heights by a score of 5-0 and put their record at 4-5-2 on the season.
