After school activities should be cancelled in extreme weather conditions. On March 13 the weather conditions at various sport practices were unsafe due to the large amounts of snow and cold temperatures. This also recurred on Saturday March 16 when there was snow, and it was cold outside.
When the temperatures reach 27 degrees and there is snow and wind outside, it is perfect weather conditions for frostbite and other illnesses such as the common cold. Students should not be made to practice outside; practice would be cancelled if there was rain. The only condition of still playing if it was raining out was if the team practiced in the gym. Athletes and students were all surprised on March 13 when it was a blizzard out and no practices were cancelled. Softball still practiced outside and the players had to try to focus on their sport while snow was falling down on them.
Not only did the softball players have to play outside, but also the track athletes starting the season out in the cold. The students have to run in all types of weather. When running in the cold your face freezes up and it becomes hard to talk to others. It also blocks the runners sight when snowflakes are flying in front of their eyes.
Students should not have to run or practice outside when the weather conditions are poor. Although the coaches for their certain athletic program want their students to keep doing their best, it is hard for them to perform 100 percent when the weather is bad. This season has been especially bad and frustrating as coaches and athletes prepare for the season in less than ideal conditions. There needs to be a happy medium between preparation and caution.
