Seventh grade physical education teacher Jill Lane has been a teacher for 37 years!
“I have taught health, physical education, coached junior high cheerleading, junior high soccer and high school basketball,” Lane said. “And now I am the athletic director at the junior high, and it has given me the opportunity to help our athletes get opportunities to compete.”
Loving your job can make things way easier and feel faster over the years.
“Simply, I love my job! I have worn many different hats in my career. I enjoy watching the students grow and compete in athletics and in physical education. Students love to compete and the activities we do in phys ed class can get very competitive!” said Lane.
Lane said it has been a pleasure to watch and coach students and athletes grow from junior high athletes to high school athletes and then some go on to play collegiately.
“I have been fortunate to watch athletes participate in the game they love. This helped me persevere,” said Lane.
Respect is earned not demanded. Having respect going both ways is very important.
Lane said, “I would tell new teachers to make sure you earn the respect of your students by having discipline and good classroom management. If you do that, the students will do what you ask of them, and your class will run smoothly.”
Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help, most veteran teachers will help you said Lane.
“Don’t sweat the small stuff, we all make mistakes and most things can be fixed. Finally, enjoy your job, it’s a lot of fun!” said Lane.
Like Lane said, don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s actually a good thing because asking questions and asking for help shows that you care.
