Not so long ago, in the mysterious land of Toronto, Canada, Scott Pilgrim was dating a high schooler.
These words are the ones that start off an incredible PG-13 movie filled with action and laughs, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” The PG-13 film rating strongly cautions parents. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. According to Wikipedia, this 2010 film distributed by Universal Pictures, was adapted into a movie based on the book by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and directed by Edgar Wright.
While 23-year-old Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) balances life not working, playing in a band and dating a high schooler, crazy things can happen. When Scott sees “the girl of his dreams,” Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), passing by in the subspace highway in his mind, he can’t get her out of his head, literally.
He then sees her at the library and a party, when Scott then orders an Amazon package to see her. He asks her if they could “hang out,” she says yes and chaos unfolds. Over the next few days, Scott has to fight all seven of Ramona’s evil exes to continue to date her. But along with the fighting, Scott runs into some other problems as well.
After hearing about the plot, you might think that it was a very successful movie, but it really wasn’t. Wikipedia also went on to say that, the movie was a box office bomb and failed to recoup the $85 million budget, and only managed to receive $49.3 million.
Though it didn’t do well in the box office, it has received positive reviews from critics, has made it onto several top ten lists, received over 70 awards and nominations and there’s multiple reasons on why it is highly acclaimed.
The plot of this movie is a masterpiece. Fighting seven evil exes, who each have their own quirks, is fantastic. The story moves on at a good pace, and Scott has other things to worry about other than the evil exes. He has to figure out what to do with his other girlfriend, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), try to strike a record deal with G-man, deal with his ex and more.
This movie has so much overall humor and creativity to it. The quick and witty words thrown around by the characters and the sheer unrealness of the movie adds lots of humor to the film. From people turning into change when they die, to the comic book/video game style to how the movie works and progresses is truly amazing.
All of the fights in the movie have some sort of uniqueness to them. Whether Scott is fighting a vegan-powered guy on bass, to a movie star with loads of stunt doubles, Scott Pilgrim has it all.
A big part of the movie is the music, and it doesn’t disappoint. The soundtrack of the movie is incredible, and I even own a record of it. Since Scott is in a band, it includes songs by them such as “Summertime,” “Threshold” and”Garbage Truck,” but some songs are from popular bands such as The Rolling Stones and Black Lips.
If you’re looking for some laughs, entertainment and action, then “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is a fantastic five star choice of a film to watch.
