Seventh grade special education teacher Lindsay Smith and her students spread kindness and collected donations for our teen shelter during the first two weeks of April. They collected various items such as snacks, bottled water and hygiene products!
Collections took place during Leader In Me classes. The winning class in each grade will receive an ice cream treat.
The teen shelter is a safe place for young kids ages 12-17, that need a place to stay or even just to spend a few hours there. Teens can go after school to get help with their homework, stay for dinner, play games and participate in nightly group discussion dealing with issues concerning their age group.
Smith says they chose to collect donations for the teen shelter because it helps so many kids around their age have a positive place to go.
If you’re a teenager that maybe doesn’t have the best home life or are just looking for a place to get away for a little bit, the teen shelter is a great place for you.
“I think it’s important for people to donate, because it gives back to the community. You never know when you might need help and giving now will be good for the future in case you ever do need help,” said Smith.
Smith says the teen shelter is most in need of hygiene products and snacks. Kids live there sometimes over night, and they have a lot of group events, so snacks are always good for hungry teenagers.
Smith said, “I’m super proud of the kids in my class and all of the kids in the Jr. High for helping the community.”
Overall, Smith’s class collected more than 1,000 snacks, drinks and hygiene products!
