Originally from Australia, the Bearded Dragon has made quite an appearance in the United States. They are now a common pet for reptile lovers. They make a perfect pet because they are very loving. Even though they require a lot of work, they return the favor in affection.

One bearded dragon owner, Collin Dougherty, tells about his Bearded Dragon named Lizzie the Lizard.

“I got her because I thought the breed was exotic and I liked it a lot,” Dougherty said.

The care for a bearded dragon is vital for it to be healthy.

“She eats vegetables like corn, lettuce and peas. She also eats crickets and mealworms,” Dougherty said.

There is also other proper care.

“You are supposed to clean out the tank once a day, change its water, put new food in, hold her for 30 to 45 min and make sure the temperature of the tank is around 90 degrees,” Dougherty said.

Younger Bearded Dragons do well in tanks about 20 gallons. Before buying one, you should look for certain signs. It should be alert, and come up to the glass to see you when you walk over. Also look for sores, burns and any other deformities.

“I got her at Gittlers in Johnstown,” Dougherty said.

“When I was younger she would come up to the side of the cage and almost wave,” Dougherty said.

Dougherty has had Lizzie for three years now.

Bearded Dragons love attention, and make good pets for children.

“She is a really loving pet,” Dougherty said.
