Shorts Time is Too Short

School’s today are either getting more and more strict with dress codes, or less and less. AASD is definitely one of the strictest dress codes in the area. Shorts can be worn from September to Oct. 31, and from April 1 until the end of the school year. Something that some students don’t understand is why students can’t wear shorts all year round. Shorts are just one of the major issues students have with the dress code. Why can other schools a few miles away wear shorts all year round?

People definitely relate on the topic that it might be too cold or wet for shorts. But, many people think students should have a say on what they want to wear. Shorts should be an option for students to choose. For example, if a student wants to wear a pair of shorts during the freezing cold winter, let them. Is it the smartest decision? No. But, students should have the freedom to choose smart or unhealthy choices. Students will not get frost bite from sitting in a heated school.

Why does it matter what the length of the shorts? Yes, it would be outrageous for a young girl to wear the shortest shorts in the mall, walking to school in blizzard like conditions. A solution, in the fall and spring students could wear whatever shorts they wanted (within reason), and in the winter students could wear knee length shorts if they choose. If it is 85 degrees out, no girl wants to wear jeans and a sweatshirt. The dress code restricts students’ comfort throughout the school day. Shorts made for girls are almost impossible to find that fit the knee length code. The latest trends never follow this outrageous dress code.

When I say within reason, I mean that students should not be wearing shorts that are not longer than their bottoms. No girl or boy should be wearing something that would be distracting or inappropriate to staff, viewers and guests. But, why is it distracting if shorts come to mid thigh? Many people believe and agree with the no leggings policy, because tight clothing has no beneficial reason to be worn. Shorts on the other hand, can help students get through those hot and stubborn days sitting all day in classrooms. With this, students would want to verify the tightness of the shorts. For example, yoga shorts or spandex should not be worn if this part of the dress code would ever change. This is because those items of clothing are considered to most people, undergarments.

Kids now a days want to follow the latest fashion trends. Shorts are just a part of the trends that make the students feel good about themselves in the most comfortable way possible. Let the students express themselves more with the weather. Comfort for the students causes a better learning environment so that students can achieve their goals later in life.
