A seventh grade Mathcounts club member moved on to states on March 24 in Hershey, Pennsylvania after training throughout the year with help from teachers and other math tools.

Seventh grader, Samantha Abbott was the only student to move on.

“I felt pretty confident to move on,” Abbott said.

Abbott joined this program when she was in fifth grade.

“I joined because I have been pretty good at math for a long time,” Abbott said.

To prepare for this competition, Abbott trained using the Mathcounts Trainer App, and she printed out practice sheets.

“Although I didn’t start the club, I volunteered to coach because I really enjoy math, and I like working on challenging problems with the members of our club,” Mathcounts coach and ninth grade math teacher Chris Lloyd said.

This was Lloyd’s first year as coach.

“To prepare, we had weekly meetings where we practiced all the types of questions the students would see when they got to the competitions,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd said other Mathcounts teams from this school have moved on in past years.
