Just recently the Central PA Humane Society announced that they need help funding the growth of their new shelter.
CPHS Outreach Coordinator Becky Felton said the animals have needed a new shelter for at least 20 years.
“The building is falling down around us because that building is over 100-years-old,” said Felton. “The animals right now don’t have a way in and out, so they have to relieve themselves inside their kennels.”
The new building has a design for the dog kennels called a guillotine. It is a door that will open upwards, so the dogs can get outside. There’s also a design for the cats called the “Catio”, where the cats will have a screened in porch.
Since the new building is much bigger than the current one, the cost of the new building is very large. Felton said that they will be trying to put the current building up sale.
“We’ll put that money towards the building of the new building,” said Felton. “We have a grant for $700 thousand; we have about $40 thousand that the community has donated.”
The first estimate of the cost of the new building was $3.5 million, but due to new architectural expansion designs, the new estimate for the cost is $4.2 million.
Felton said that there is another fundraiser coming up, and she hopes the funding goal will be reached in the next three to four years. The reason these pets need shelters like the CPHS is because some people don’t have the maturity to handle animals.
“People get animals and think they’re cute, but they don’t realize they’re not throwaway objects,” said Felton. “When you take on an animal, it’s like having a child. You take on for that animal’s life.”
Felton said that any donation is used directly for the building. That includes helping out the animals and the old building, or paying for the new one.
“Any and all support is very much appreciated,” said Felton. “Our animals send many tail wags and thanks for the generosity of the community.
