Eighth and ninth grade silks take part in a group called indoor silks. They practice every Wednesday in the gym. Belonging to the team keeps the girls going and it gives them something extra to do.
The girls enjoy the organization for many reasons.
“It helps you remember routines and learn new things,” ninth grader Sammi Beeler said.
“I loved silks marching bands,” ninth grader Anna Zettle said.
Zettle and Beeler were both asked about their routine they are competing with. Beeler was asked if she likes competing with the routines.
“Yes, it helps you improve and get other ideas from other teams,” Beeler said.
Anna was asked if she thought her routines would do well in competitions.
“Most likely because it’s faster, “ Zettle said.
“I like how you meet new people when new people join,” Zettle said.
Zettle is the captain of the silks so she was asked if she is put to higher standards as the captain.
“Yes, I need to be the most responsible,” Zettle said.
“I practice everyday except for on the weekends,” Beeler said.
“The coach makes us do the routine over and over again until we get it right,” Zettle said.
Beeler says she plans on continuing with silks in high school because it is really fun. The silks seem to have fun and enjoy being in the program. Most silks say they love the program, and they have a lot of fun competing with what they got. They say it is a great experience to go through.
“The theme this year is Smooth by Santana. It has a Latin beat,” silks coach Peggy Guyer said. “We started in October. The silks practice one night a week for two hours, but the practice is very intense.” Guyer said.
The silks will be competing the routine on Dec. 8 at nine a.m. at Altoona Area Junior High School.
“I think the silks really enjoy the indoor silks routines more than the football ones because they can add steps they can’t on the field like dance moves,” Guyer said.
