Is Victoria’s secret better than Aerie?

The store Aerie based on the store American Eagle, has recently launched a new campaign called Aerie Real.  The campaign is all about being body positive, that means absolutely no retouching photos.  Ever since Aerie decided to become Aerie real, I have stopped shopping at Victoria’s Secret. Don’t get me wrong the models and clothing that come from Victoria’s secret are stunning, but Victoria’s Secret has created a body image that is impossible for girls to achieve.  Even the models that work for Victoria’s Secret don’t have the body that consumers see on the billboards and posters, most of the bodies people see on those advertisements have been retouched.  It’s sad to say but many teenage girls look up to that image and are insecure about their bodies because they’re looking up to an unrealistic body image.

Aerie has made girls like myself less insecure when looking into a mirror.  I love to walk into Aerie stores and see the celebration of beautiful women that come in all different shapes and sizes.  Aerie Real proves that body positive ads in fact lead to spikes in sales; a body positive campaign plays a major rule in clothing sales.  When Aerie went Aerie Real they added new sizes for petite and plus sized girls.  Their top model right now is Iskra Lawrence!  She was their first curvy model.

When I walk into an Aerie store I know they have comfy and affordable clothing, unlike walking into a Victoria’s Secret and seeing unpractical undergarments that don’t look comfortable at all.  Aerie is better than Victoria’s Secret for a number of reasons but the biggest thing for me is that Aerie is promoting body positive while Victoria’s Secret is making young girls insecure about their unrealistic beauty standards.
