Julie Good prepares to finish up her first year as a seventh grade reading teacher at Altoona Area Junior High School.  She replaced long time reading teacher Paula Stitt.  Good came from teaching at Juniata Gap.

Before ever teaching at the junior high this year Good was previously a teacher at Wright for one year, W&J for two years, Juniata Gap for eleven years and Baker for one year.  She was also an Itinerant Gifted Support teacher for four years which she really enjoyed because she got to travel around the school district and work with kids in kindergarten through sixth grade.

“In elementary, I usually had about 24 students all day long, and I was responsible to teach all subjects.  Now, I have over 100 students, but I can focus on only one subject,” she said.

“ My transition from elementary to the junior high was a challenge.  I was lucky to have a lot of help and support from my team and other reading teachers.  I was excited for the change and found seventh graders to be a really fun group to teach.  The hardest part for me was getting use to the schedule and learning all my students’ names,” Good said.

Although her first year in this school Good is a veteran teacher.

“I have taught grades K-6.  One year, I taught second grade in the morning and fourth grade in the afternoon.  Another year, I taught only math for first through sixth grade. In elementary school, I really like fourth grade, and in the junior high, I am happy teaching seventh grade reading,” Good said.

Good said she loved teaching elementary school for 19 years but she really enjoys teaching at the junior high.  She feels very fortunate to be given the opportunity to teach at the school.
