Rebecca Hoy attends Pennsylvania State University in State College and plans to graduate this year.  Every year for the past four years, she has paid $30,000 to $40,000 in tuition and still has more to pay off. She didn’t receive any scholarships to help her with her college cost. Without the help of her grandparents, Hoy would need to pay for her student loans for 10 years instead five.

“I would have loved to have this opportunity and if I would’ve had a lot of money for a specific school, I may have thought about going there,” Hoy said.

Raise.me is a micro scholarship program that any high school student can join.  This gives students money just by entering their grades and activities.  An A in a class can give the student $18 to $1,500.  Perfect attendance can raise the amount up to $600.

Students now have an opportunity to apply for these micro scholarships when they sign up for Raise.me. Those who plan on attending an university can raise up to $16,000 by entering their grades into the program.  There are over 100 colleges that offer money to those whom participate in the program.

“This encourages students to do well and work hard.  There’s the fact that you’re lessening the debt you have when you come out of college,” Hoy said.

The more the students participate and excel in school, the more money they will receive.  Students receive more money the higher their grades are and how many activities they are apart of.  Currently, 33 ninth graders are involved in this foundation.

“I think every student should take this opportunity. Even though it’s far away, college will come quickly and there are a lot of things to worry about that comes with it,” Hoy said.
